Accelerated College Programs… Ever Wish You’d Gotten a Different Degree?
Remember when you were in primary school, and you’d have to do those “What I Want to be When I Grow Up” projects? I sure do. And a couple years ago I remember thinking back on those projects and thinking about what a cruel joke they seemed, considering how I ended up. And if it weren’t for accelerated college programs, I’d still be thinking that way.
And it’s not like I slacked off, either. Good grades through high school, got into a good college, got my degree in History and… ended up manning a phone in a telemarketing company for a living. Now, granted, my “What I Want to be When I Grow Up” projects included some pretty silly ideas… cowboy, astronaut, cupcake baker… But I’d have been a lot happier as a cupcake baker versus getting hung up on 40 times a day by people who didn’t want me calling them in the first place.
That’s why I’m so glad I heard about accelerated college programs. Cause the problem wasn’t me being stupid or lazy–it was the fact that I majored in history and, other than being a history teacher (which I didn’t want to do at all), there just weren’t that many jobs. But once I started looking at accelerated college programs that were geared towards people who wanted change careers, I set things right.
You see, there are programs that take into account all of your prior work. Granted, I had to take another semester of courses for my new major–business management–but all of my electives and core classes were transferred without a fuss. No arguing with departments or anything. Plus, that semester of further coursework? Well, my “semester” was only six weeks long, cause the classes were condensed. Now I have a job I love, thanks to accelerated college programs.
