Accelerated Bachelors Degree Programs: Choose your major with care

Especially for those who don’t hold a degree, there’s a certain mystique to having a diploma.  Surely, once you have a diploma, you’ll have all kinds of great job offers, right?  Not necessarily.  Competition is brutal in the job market right now, and that’s true as true if you’re a college grad if not–although you will be competing for different jobs (in most cases) than your non-degree-holding counterparts.

So if you’re looking into accelerated bachelor degree programs, and your motivation is mostly career focused, you need to do some serious research on majors, jobs, and average salaries before you assume that a diploma equals bigger paychecks.

Is a Bigger Paycheck Your Only Reason for Looking into Accelerated Bachelor Degree Programs?

If so, understand that choosing the right degree in order to make more money might be more complicated than you think.

Of course, you should obviously not assume that any degree will equal a higher pay check, but you also should realize that there are a variety of factors that affect what your salary will be–and they might not all hinge on the degree itself.

Some people make the mistake of just looking at statistics regarding average pay of graduates of certain majors.  During better times in the job market, this might be helpful.  But the high-paying major you choose from the options offered in  accelerated bachelor degree programs won’t do you a bit of good if there aren’t openings in the field for you to start off in.

Other majors, however, which the statistics claim aren’t profitable–like teaching and nursing–are entry into careers that are constantly facing critical shortages, and have higher median pay or great benefits that offset the lower initial pay.  Whatever you choose from the accelerated bachelors degree programs you look at, choose for the right reasons!
