Accelerated BSN Online: A Typical Program for Second Degree Students

There are so many accelerated BSN online programs being advertised.  But they’re not all the same.  There are BSN programs for non-nurses without degrees, for RNs who want to earn their BSN degrees, for LPNs who aspire to hold a BSN–and so on.

It’s confusing.  There are the general education requirements, the nursing science and related coursework, and then there are clinicals.

Most of the students looking at accelerated BSN programs already have some educational background.  For non-nursing degree holders, the various options can be the most confusing.

Prerequisites for a Typical Accelerated BSN Online Program for Non-Nursing Degree Holders

If you hold a degree, in almost any subject, it should cover many of the core non-nursing requirements for your BSN.  But you should read over program requirements carefully; certain very specific requirements may necessitate your taking additional courses before beginning the accelerated BSN program.

For example, you’ll need a number of science courses, and the prerequisites of these are often inflexible.  They could include Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, and/or Physiology and the associated labs.

Accelerated BSN Online Nursing Science Coursework

Your accelerated BSN study will truly begin once you start your online nursing science courses.  Most accelerated BSN courses for second-degree students recommend that you take the courses full-time, and that you aren’t working concurrently with study.  This is generally two semesters of full-time study.

Clinical Practicum, and/or Internships

Finally, you’ll complete your clinical practicum, commonly called “clinicals”, and may be required to participate in additional internships.  This portion of your study, obviously, will not be online.  Your nursing program will cooperated with a hospital or other medical care facility within commuting distance, where you can finish this last part of earning your accelerated BSN online degree before taking your qualification exams.
