- What is an accelerated BSN program?
An accelerated Bachelor of Nursing degree can mean any one of a few different things. It can be an accelerated degree program for non-nurses who don’t hold any degree at all–in this case it will encompass a four year degree, plus the clinical portion of nursing study, at an accelerated pace. It can also be a degree designed for non-nurses who already hold a bachelor’s or associate degree; in this case the classes themselves may not be accelerated, but since previous credits are applicable, it takes less time to complete. And to further complicate matters for those just beginning their research into this type of degree, there are degrees for RNs and LPNs which give credit for some of their prior schooling. - Who can get into an accelerated BSN program?
First, that depends on the type of program itself. Generally speaking though, you need to have strong math and science skills, and the qualifying test scores to prove them; you’ll also need to fulfill the prerequisites particular to the program you’re applying for. - Who should consider getting a BSN degree?
Anyone who has or wants a nursing career should strongly consider getting their BSN. - How long does an accelerated BSN program take to complete?
Depending on the prerequisites, an accelerated program can take anywhere from one to four years to complete–the more prerequisites required (like a prior degree) the less time it takes to complete the degree, generally speaking. - What schools offer accelerated BSN program options?
Many online schools and traditional nursing colleges offer accelerated BSN degree programs of one type or another. Always make sure that the school is accredited and be doubly certain that the program will fulfill the requirements your state sets for graduates to qualify for taking their nursing exam.
