Accelerated BSN Programs: Stop making excuses!

Oh, believe me, I know how it goes!  You’re an RN.  It was no piece of cake getting there to start with, was it?  And now you’re working your rear off.  40 hour weeks are more like 60 hour weeks, always on your feet, probably not making nearly enough to justify the workload, and did I mention the crazy schedule?  Nine to five sounds like a vacation!

Sure, you’ve thought about getting your bachelor’s degree, the coveted BSN, but you haven’t looked at the details cause, really, you just don’t have time.  Besides, you say, you don’t have four years to invest, and even if you cut your hours you don’t see how it would be possible to schedule around classes.  Well, that’s one issue that accelerated BSN programs address.

What’s this about Accelerated BSN Programs?

My question, too, when I talked to a girl at work who had gone to part-time to complete one.  Accelerated degree programs for your bachelors in nursing take into account any of your prior credits, and offer some condensed (6 or 8 week) classes for the coursework portion.  And of course, you don’t have to complete all the same clinical stuff over again, though you have to do some.

I asked her if commuting for classes wasn’t killer, since where we work is at least an hour from the nearest nursing school, but it turns out a lot of accelerated BSN programs are offered online, that’s what she was doing.  So no commuting for class! And the classes weren’t on a set schedule.  I mean, her assignments had set due dates, but she could log on whenever to get or review study materials.

And since her program, like all good accelerated BSN programs, is fully accredited, she qualified for financial aid, government grants, and all that.

I’m running out of excuses to not get my BSN… What about you?
