What exactly are accelerated college courses, and why do people take them?

They’re basically condensed classes–the same classes as normally paced college courses, except you finish them faster.  That doesn’t mean they’re easier or contain less information–on the contrary, they can be more challenging, because you have to learn just as much in a much shorter period of time.

Accelerated college classes usually are 6-8 weeks long.  In traditional colleges, they’re usually offered during the summer session as a way to fit in an “extra” semester.  Some online programs offer accelerated courses year round.

Who is a good candidate for taking accelerated college courses?

There’s no one way to define a “good student,” but generally speaking students in accelerated classes must be very motivated, dedicated learners who have a skill for picking up information quickly.

If you also work, taking accelerated classes might mean putting in long hours of study on top of your usual work schedule.  So remember that faster doesn’t necessarily mean easier.  But that shouldn’t be a bad thing–you want your accelerated classes to be from reputable schools and worth just as many credits, right?

How do I get enrolled in accelerated college courses?

Accelerated College classesCheck out different university catalogs to look for the courses you need.  As mentioned above, a lot of traditional schools offer accelerated sessions during the summer.

You can also look at online programs, many of which are based entirely around online, accelerated classes.

Can I take all accelerated college courses for my degree?

You can, but be cautious.  Choose a degree program which is designed with doing just that in mind.

Traditional degree programs may offer some accelerated courses sometimes, but you will end up waiting around for the courses you need, and sometimes waste semesters doing so.
