Or you could start in October after the craziness of September has died down. Or March when everybody else is thinking about spring break, you could start your degree.
Accelerated Business Degree Online – Accelerated Classes vs. Self-Paced Classes
What makes an accelerated online business degree so easy to fit into your already full life are these two options.
- Accelerated Online Classes
- Self-Paced Classes
The names say it all, these options get you through your degree fast and at your own pace.
Accelerated online classes are offered on a regular schedule with assigned due dates and a set finish date. This is different from a self paced class.
A self paced class is more flexible than an accelerated business class.
Option 1: Accelerated Online Business Classes
Just like you are in charge of when to start your degree, you can be in charge of how fast you complete your classes. Typically a semester class will take you 16 weeks. We don’t have time for that!
You can take an accelerated class in business law online and be done in just 8 weeks. Same textbooks, same level of teaching, same assignments. Just twice as fast.
Then you can take another class. In the time it would have taken you to complete one course in a classroom you will have taken two classes online.
It is like high speed internet versus dial up (you remember those days, right?). They both get the same job done but one is twice as fast. Choose high speed.
Option 2: Self-Paced Online Business Classes
If you want more flexibility than an accelerated business class will provide, you may be interested in Western Governors University or Capella University which offer self-paced business courses.
How this works at Capella University is you pay a flat fee ($2300) for each 12 week session. During that time you can take as many courses as you want.
You can take two at a time, but once you complete one you can take another right away. You are in charge of the deadlines and the speed that you go at.

3 Ways to Accelerate Your Business Degree Even More
Now, if business is your thing you have heard this saying:
“Work smarter, not harder.”
These three options to accelerate your business degree are the work smarter options. You are already working hard. Let’s give you options to maximize your hardwork.
#1 – Test out of college classes (up to 1 year)
Yes. Get credit for classes you didn’t attend. You’re welcome.
It is just what it sounds like. Take an exam instead of taking a class.
Instead of attending a night class on economics that is so dry and boring you contemplate poking your eye out with a pencil because you already know all this material, you just take the exam and get the credit.
Through the College Level Examination Program you can register to earn up to 30 credits by taking exams in the courses you need. Like economics, accounting, and business law.
Once you register for the exam online, you grab a study guide and read through it. Then write the exam. All you have to do is pass. 50% will give you credit for the course.
#2 – Get college credit for your life and work experience
Even better than testing out of classes is getting credit for your life and work experience. For real. That’s a thing.
Typically this is called Credit for Prior Learning. Do you have credentials from working in
- law enforcement
- real estate
- management training
Then you can get credit for that. Some universities, like Liberty University, will award you credit for your experience through a submitted portfolio.
Another option is to check out the American Council on Education website. ACE recommends college credit for courses or training you may have completed through your workplace.
Either way, through submitting a portfolio or ACE recommended credits, you get credit and you don’t attend class.
That’s a smart deal.
#3 – Stay continuously enrolled with max courseload
Taking the maximum number of classes you can is the work harder part. Still smart but this is hard work.
Instead of taking a few courses here and there, you go gangbuster. A typical student will earn 30 credits in one year. But if you take 18 credit hours every semester, fall, spring and summer (I said this was hard, right?) in 12 months you will have 54 credits.
You see how this is the hard work part. But it will cut your time to getting your degree in half. That’s the smart part.
Transferring Your Existing College Credits
Do you already have college credit? This can help you with getting your business degree.
You will need to check off 3 things first:
- Your college credit came from an accredited college
- You received a grade of C or higher
- Your classes from before fit into your new degree plan (even if they don’t, you can still transfer them as an elective)
If you have credit from an accredited college it counts and you can transfer that credit to another accredited college. Win-win.
For example if you have already taken Microeconomics, Business Principles and Financial Accounting worth 9 credits you can transfer your credits to your new school. As long as you stayed awake in those classes and got a C.
Best case scenario is you need those classes for your business degree. Good enough scenario, the classes count as electives that you won’t need to take again.
Accelerated Business Degrees Can Help You Lower Tuition Costs
Who doesn’t want to save money? Spending less on tuition equals more for you. Sounds like a good deal.
Although the cost of tuition for a degree you earn online can be similar to a traditional school, there are ways for you to lower your tuition costs.
At American Intercontinental University the tuition rate is $302 per credit hour. If you took a College Level Examination Program exam to test out of a class you would spend $80 to earn 3 credits. Compare that to $302 x 3 = $906 for a regular class. Doesn’t that make you want to take as many College Level Examination Program exams as possible?
Let’s look at how those savings will pan out over your degree.
Cost Savings for an Accelerated Business Degree
|Ways to earn college credit||# of College Credits||Cost of Credits||Cost Per Credit Hour|
|College Level Examination Program||30||$800||$27|
|Credit for Prior Learning||15||$1500||$100|
The cost for a degree (120 credit hours) using these savings would be $24,950.
If you went to the University of Virginia you are looking at $60,768 for 4 years.
The University of Illinois would cost $60, 216.
Business Degree Accreditation
All good degrees are accredited. You are going to get a good degree. A business degree can be earned at most regionally accredited colleges.
If you want to get the best of the best level of accreditation you would be looking for a school accredited by
- Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
- Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
- Network of International Business Schools (NIBS)
- Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
Those are your big names in business degree accreditation. But you don’t really need a big name, as long as your school is accredited regionally you are golden.
Once you earn a business degree you are launching yourself into a bigger playing field. A playing field that includes more job opportunities, more money and more promotions.
Does that sound like a place you would want to be in 18-24 months?
An accelerated online business degree can get you there with maximum efficiency. Without sacrificing your current job, family life or income.
You can use this game plan. Take online classes. Test out of college classes. Get the credit you deserve for your life and work experience. Work hard and take as many classes as possible.
Future you will be holding a degree in business. Playing on a much bigger field. But you can’t win until you join the game.
Are you ready to get your ball in the game?
